He excelled at poetry, classical prose, calligraphy, and painting. He was a close friend of Chu Yun-ming (1460-1526) and Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559), who taught him the art of painting. Lu developed his own special characteristics, and became revered in his own time. He enjoyed imitating the styles of Sung masters, but often expressed his own ideas as well. Mountains encircle a thatched cottage built on a level slope in this painting, which was executed when the artists was eighty. In the front is a small stream which flows quietly. A hermit sits leisurely enjoying the mountain colors. The distinct structure of the mountains and rocks are characteristic of Lu’s painting style. The work was painted on gold paper which does not absorb water, and the colors were applied with a brush. Because of the gold paper, Lu has captured an especially distinct effect. This is the eighth leaf from An Album of Mounted Fan Painting by Ming Artists.
