[Layman of Sheng-hua]) was a native of Hsiu-ning. Anhwei. He excelled at painting Buddhist and Taoist figures, acquiring the methods of Wu Tao-tzu (fl. 710-760) and the pai-miao (plain-line) figure painting methods of Li Kung-lin (1049-1106). Ting Yun-p’eng is considered a late Ming dynasty master. A green pine, the trunk and branches of which are convoluted, stands near a stream and in its shade sit two lohans. In the distant background, faint mountains are visible. The inscription reads, “Painted in the eighth lunar month of the ping-tzu year (1576) of the Wan-li era.” The composition and mood of this painting is very elegant, but due to the angular brushwork, the work slightly lacks in a sense of natural vitality. This painting is the eighth leaf from “An Album of Painted Fans by Ming Dynasty Painters” and is the earliest work by Ting Yun-p’eng in the Museum’s collection.
