According to Wen’s inscription at the right, this work ought to be entitled “Dawn Clearing by Yucheng,” but the current title is given in the catalogue of the Qing dynasty court collection from which it comes. The ancient name of Gaoyou was Yucheng, the character “yu” meaning “wide-mouthed jar,” in reference to the geographic appearance of the area. This place connected the northern and southern extensions of the Grand Canal and had since the Ming dynasty been an important station along local water and land routes. The painting depicts the city walls and gate tower of what was probably Gaoyou Station at the time. The land at the top of the composition indicates not the expansive waters of Lake Tai, for example, but instead the other bank of the Grand Canal. Wen Boren did this work with free and cursive strokes, suggesting the appearance of Gaoyou early in the morning after a rain, the moisture creating a slight haze for a serene scene.(20100713)
