Although his given name was Pi, he was best known under his sobriquet Cheng-ming. Another sobriquet was Cheng-chung. His style names were T’ing-yun-sheng and Heng-shan chu-shih. He excelled in all of the literati arts: poetry, prose, calligraphy and painting. He learned painting from Shen Chou and became one of the Four Masters of the Ming dynasty. His painting style has had a far-reaching influence on later Ming painters. By the countryside, orchids and bamboos grow out of the bushes of thorns. The painting is filled with tranquility and gracefulness. The leaf is from the album, Paintings of Wen Cheng-ming.
