He also had the sobriquets Nantian and Yunxi waishi. He specialized in flower painting, combining the “boneless” method of washes with “sketching from life” techniques, creating a style of his own and making him a master of flower painting in the Qing dynasty. This leaf, originally a folding fan, comes from “Album of Qing Flower Paintings.” Using “boneless” washes, it depicts picked stems of field poppies, which bloom in mid-summer. Their poses are extremely delicate and graceful, the petals undulating at various angles as they appear to gaze about. The leaves were done with cyanine blue and ink, while the petals feature graded washes of gamboges yellow, rouge, and vegetable green, the red and white flowers all rendered over a base of white. The colors are extremely elegant and tender, presenting a pure and fresh appearance on paper with light silver lining.(20110102)
