On an autumn night, two boats-almost appearing as one-head for the shore to pass the night. Water and sky seem to blend, and light reflecting on the waves shimmers. In the foreground, maple leaves and rush flowers suggest autumn. Attendants wait with lanterns and horses on a bank covered with an endless stretch of reeds. Chang Hung used quivering brushwork to depict the mountains, rocks, and trees, and splayed brushwork for the waves and autumn leaves. This combination results in a varied, glimmering surface. Chang perhaps chose the subject from Song of the P’i-p’a by Po Chu-i, completing it in 1628 at the age of 51. This is the 6th leaf from the album P’i-hsun chi-ku.
