The composition and subject is identical to the third leaf with a black background of Xuanzong’s “Three Paintings of Rats” (now in the Palace Museum, Beijing) but different in terms of the quality of painting. The signature here gives the date as 1428 and says it was presented to the official Xing Kuan (?-1454), bearing a seal that reads, “Treasure of Wuying Palace.” The signature and seal, though, differ in quality from other examples of Xuanzong’s art. The opposing leaf has an imperial inscription by the Qing emperor Renzong (Jiaqing, 1760-1820) dated to 1808 and done in regular script.(20120407)
