The katydid is a symbol of great progeny, and the melon is known for having many seeds and its sprawling vines. Thus, this work is an auspicious blessing for “having many sons and grandsons”. The skin of the melon was done in washes of darker green while the veins were filled with yellowish ochre. Light washes of malachite were used for the area split open. The edges of the melon leaf, to show they have begun to wither, are touched with yellowish ochre. This composition is similar to that of Katydids and a Melon Plant by Han Yu (fl. 1131-1162) in the Museum collection. This is the 3rd leaf from “Collected Works by Sung Painters”.
