Ch’eng Lin has used vivid red and green tones to depict the exquisite blossom, using bright green on the leaves. The brilliant tones, however, are anything but vulgar; they lend the painting vigor and freshness. Ch’eng Lin (whose style name was Yu-lai) was from Yi-hsien in Anhwei, but spent most of his life in Chia-hsing, Chekiang. He is noted for his paintings of flowers and plants, particularly for his ink paintings of peonies.
