Chuang Yuan
Ch’ing Dynasty
Chuang Yuan is not recorded in the histories of painting, but judging from the style of his paintings he must have been a court painter slightly before the reign of Ch’ien-lung (1736-1796), for he belongs to the same school as Leng Mei. His brushwork is fine and delicate, his use of color thick and pronounced. He specialized in painting historical figures and anecdotes. According to its inscription, this painting represents Lin Pu enjoying plum blossoms. Lin Pu was a famous scholar of the Northern Sung during the time of Chen-tsung (r.997-1022). He never pursued an official career but lived in retirement at West Lakeenear Hangchou devoting himself to poetry and calligraphy. He particularly loved plum blossoms and cranes, and because he had no family, it was said that the plum was his wife and the crane his son.
