His tzu (style name) was Shih-k’uei, his birth and death dates are unknown. During Emperor Ch’ien-lung’s inspection tour of the south in 1760 Chin presented to the court an album of Lohans painted in the pai-miao (ink-outline) manner. Consequently he was summoned to continue on as a court painter. Chin’s extant paintings date from between 1760-1767. He excelled at figure painting, but is also known for his flowers, landscapes and architectural paintings. By a bank, thick with grass, is a grove of trees. Grass and leaves and distant trees are depicted with a wet brush. The variance of ink tones from deep to light is effectivd. Two young herdsboys sit atops their respective oxen. One plays the flute, the other claps his hands to the rhythm. The two oxen are comfortable and at ease. The musical sounds of the picture are deep and resonant and together with the scenery provide a pure and remote feeling.
