Chin served in the Painting Academy until the early years of the Ch’ien-lung reign (r. 1736-96). A City of Cathay and The Empress Attending to the Rite of Sericulture are among the paintings that Chin Kun and his colleagues jointly produced during the Ch’ien-lung period. The pine and rock, symbolizing longevity, are the subjects of this album, from which two leaves are shown here. The leaf entitled “Moon Light” beautifully conveys the poetic mood of a T’ang verse: the bright moon shines on the pine while the clear stream flows among the rocks. “Autumn Frost” is another leaf which depicts a late autumn scene with rocks lying behind intertwined pine trees and a red maple branch.
