In 1790, he received the chin-shih civil service degree and went on to serve as the Minister of Revenue. Gifted at poetry and prose, he also excelled at painting landscapes, which were appreciated by the Ch’ien-lung Emperor (r. 1736-1795). According to Dream of the Eastern Capital (Tung-ching meng-hua lu) of the Sung dynasty (960-1279), on the last day of the lunar year, it was the custom to take the “ox of spring” into the imperial compound and welcome the new year. This ox was made of clay and was used to lead away the winter cold during the last month of the lunar year, and, on the first day of spring, to symbolize the start of tilling the fields. This painting describes this custom, as people line the streets with festive decorations as they welcome the clay ox. Common folk can be seen bustling about, having stopped to look at the clay ox.
