A female painter of the early Ch’ing dynasty, she was adept in all areas of painting but especially the genre of birds and flowers. Her works were amply collected by the Ch’ing dynasty court. This is the third leaf of an album of ten leaves painted in 1717, when Ch’en Shu was fifty-seven. Orchids grow by a strange rock. Three branches of thorny brambles are seen on a slope. The painting uses light ink and colors; the orchid leaves and flowers are in the “boneless” style, grasses are dotted and the rock combines outlines with gradated washes. Flowers and a rock support each other. Their airs are pure and elegant, and their colors soft and moist. @#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@Flowers Ch’en Shu (1660-1736) Ch’ing Dynasty Ch’en Shu was a lady painter of the Ch’ing dynasty. A native of Chekiang, she came from a poor family and sold paintings for a living. Later, her son went on to become an official and she was awarded the title of “Great Virtue.” She was gifted at painting landscapes and figures with an archaic spirit, but she especially excelled at representing birds-and-flowers as well as insects-and-grasses. This work was completed in 1717. The brushwork is strong and the spirit archaic, giving the style a profound yet natural quality. Combining the techniques of monochrome and color painting, this painting reveals her elegant sense of brush and ink as well as the utmost harmony of her refined style.
