He served as a Grand Secretary in the Wen-hua Hall. Before taking public office, Chiang was a good friend of Ku Hsueh-p’o and enjoyed painting from nature. But after becoming an official at court, he did not paint lightly as before. His rare paintings consequently came to be highly valued in the palace. And as he painted so rarely there remains only a few of his works. This painting depicts pomgranetes, whose leaves are first outlined in ink and then added with color wash. The arrangement of the branches and leaves are both natural and well ordered, revealing the artist’s talented skill in composition. The application of a mixtue of soot and glue achieves the glossy black of the butterflies’ wings which are sparkled with eye-arresting red dots. The butterflies are simply charming.
