Chou Yung (1476-1548)
Ming Dynasty
Chou Yung, style name Hsing-chih, sobriquet Pai-ch’uan, was a native of Wu-chiang, Kiangsu. In 1502, he received the Chin-shih degree and he ultimately served as minister in the Ministry of Personnel. He was an intelligent, just, and loyal man, as well as a skilled painter. He studied painting from the Wu school artist Shen Chou. His works are exceptionally elegant.
This set of ten album leaves depicts ten scenes from along the His-an river in the Huang Mountains area of Anhwei Province. The majority are painted from the perspective of great height of distance. Hermits and scholars relax among the springs, rocks, mountain peaks, pavilions and temples. The scenery was painted using the hsieh-i, or freestyle method. The viewer is drawn into the painting. The last leaf bears the date 1530, which indicates that the album was painted when the artist was fifty-four years old.
