He excelled at painting figures and also represented landscapes and flowers. Chin presented an “Album of Lohans” painted in fine outline manner to the Ch’ien-lung Emperor (r. 1736-1795) on his southern inspection tour. Appreciating his accomplishment, the emperor summoned him to serve as a painter at court. Under slender bamboo by a stream as well as a canopy of red leaves, a group of six scholars are seen here in leisurely refinement. Three are in the center sitting by a stone table playing a drinking game, while the other three are each shown leaning, walking, and cooling off by the stream. Next to the earthen form in the foreground are two child-attendants preparing drinks as they call out. Chin T’ing-piao specialized in painting the sages and scholars of antiquity. In this painting, his brushwork is fluid and coloring elegant, making this typical of his style.
