He entered the Jesuit College in Italy at the age of 19 and there studied painting and architecture. In 1715, when he was 27, he was sent to China and on arrival was summoned to serve in the Imperial court. He was a good painter of figures, flowers, and especially of horses. This painting shows three chrysanthemums, one deep red and two pale. With strong contrasts of light and shade, it possesses a most life-like appearance. The leaves also catch and reflect the light as it turning in the wind. This concern for realistic depiction was the basis of Castiglione’s style.
