He served as a painter in the painting academy during the Ch’ien-lung period (1736-1796) and specialized in figures and landscapes. His style approached that of Chin T’ing-piao, particularly in the use of the “small axe stroke” to render the surfaces of trees and rocks. He made little use of ink wash to produce the strong contrast of light and shade on the rugged surface of rocks. This painting represents the foot of a mountain beside a stream, where an ancient plum tree is blooming and three scholars lean against a stone bench writing poetry. The use of color in the figures, trees, and rocks is elegant and beautiful, but the filling in of details with the brush is overdone and rather stiff, destroying any feeling of naturalness or spontaneity.
