Chang Hao
Ch’ing dynasty
While the events of Chang Hao’s life are unclear, he was a court painter during the reign of the Ch’ien-lung emperor. This painting illustrates a poem by the T’ang poet Yuan Chen entitled the Lien-ch’ang Palace. T’ang Ming-huang and his consort Yang Kuei-fei stand beside the balcony railing gazing into the flourishing enclosed garden. Outside the palace walls, an old man walks slowly across a bridge. He seems to think about the Lien-ch’ang Palace and the period of great splendor and decline which it witnessed during the T’ang dynasty.
