In early years he studied flower painting with his grandmother, Chen Shu, later also turning to landscape painting, following the styles of Wang Meng of the Yuan and Wang Yuanqi of the early Qing. He also was taught by Dong Bangda, becoming a leading court painter. This work in sketchy brushwork depicts a decorative rock and bamboo in the wind with cockscomb and chrysanthemum blossoms. Most of Qian’s flowers feature the delicate beauty of court painting, but this work has light and elegant brushwork instead, revealing a literati air that is rare among his surviving works.
