Her birth and death dates are unknown. She was proficient in composing poetry and prose, and was a skilled calligrapher and painter. Specializing in the painting of beautiful women, her brush manner was archaic and refined. In depicting clothing she used lines which have been described as resembling the trailing roots of a water plant. Her application of colors was light and elegant and to a degree she inherited the ideas of the masters of the Northern Sung. In her late years she specialized in ink paintings of Kuan-yin. According to tradition, her husband, Ch’en Chih-lin, a native of Chekiang Province, because of certain affairs died beyond the frontier. There upon she painted a thousand Kuan-yin scrolls and presented them to the emperor, entreating him to return her husbands remains to his home for burial. Because of this her fame spread far and wide.
