A squirrel is eating the melon seeds and walnuts that he stole from the small vase lying on the ground. The representation of a squirrel or in Chinese "pine-mouse" indicates that most likely this painting was done in the mouse year according to the Chinese calendar. Like many other New Year painting, the squirrel stealing seeds and these two kinds of flowers bear auspicious meaning.@#@@#@內容簡介（英文）@#@Attributed to an anonymous artist, Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) Hanging scroll, ink and colors on silk, 81.5 x 38.4 cm Sprigs of white blossoming plum appear in a vase with crackle pattern to the rear of the composition, and in front is a planter with narcissi. This is a painting of offerings for the Lunar New Year; during the holidays, narcissi are presented as blessings to symbolize that all will go as one wishes in the new year. Also shown here is a squirrel on top of a vase lying on its side, the melon seeds and walnuts inside having spilled out. This not only adds life to the scene, the characters for “seed” and “walnut” in Chinese are also homophones for the auspicious message of “May children and grandchildren be in harmony.” This work is unsigned, but the combination of various auspicious objects along with the squirrel (suggesting a production for the Year of the Rat) is compositionally similar to an anonymous tapestry in the National Palace Museum collection entitled “Picture for the New Year” from the Qianlong reign (1736-1795) in the Qing dynasty.(20110102)
