His grandfather Ma Hsing-tsu, father Ma Shih-jung, brother Ma K’uei, and son Ma Lin all excelled in painting, and they became famous as a family painters. Ma was a Painter-in-Attendance in the courts of Kuang-tsung (r.1189-1194) and Ning-tsung (r.1194-1224). He was skilled in painting landscapes, figures, birds, and animals. Both he and his contemporary, Hsia Kuei, were called “Ma-Hsia” for the style they created. Under pines, a lofty scholar sits gazing at the moon. A stream winds though a forest. Light, vapor-like mist rises up, filling the entire painting with a misty atmosphere. Although the painting is signed “Ma Yuan” in the lower left corner in a rock crevice, this painting is by a Ming dynasty artist working in the tradition of Ma Yuan and Hsia Kuei.
