@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@ Chu Ju-lin, painted this handscroll in 1711. It is the only painting of his still extant. There is no further information regarding his life available.
The painting depicts seventy insects in fine detail; each insect is imbued with life. Chu’s use of the brush is delicate and vigorous and his application of color is elegant and light. The painting is in the capable categories.
Chu Ju-lin is not recorded in the histories of Chinese painting. In the inscription of this handscroll, Chu states that he began this handscroll one day at a gathering of his literary friends and completed it a month later. Furthermore, ha would gladly offer this handscroll in exchange for poems. To infer from this inscription, Chu was indeed a man of refined taste.
Nothing is known about Chu Ju-lin, except that he did this work (his only surviving one) in 1711.
This long handscroll includes representations of 70 insects (including butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, beetles, a mantis, a spider, a centipede, and even a cockroach), all of which appear in lifelike detail. The brushwork is strong yet fine and the coloring is elegant and pure, making this a rare masterpiece in the "sketching from life" tradition. At the end of the scroll, the artist wrote in his inscription that he began painting it one day at a gathering of literary friends and completed it a month later. Expressing his desire to exchange it for the poetry of a literary friend, it shows that the artist must have been a refined gentleman himself.@#@@#@網頁展示說明@#@朱汝琳其人,畫史無傳。
(20121016)@#@@#@網頁展示說明@#@Traditional painting histories mention nothing about Zhu Rulin. This work was done in late spring of 1711, depicting a total of seventy insects that all appear lifelike. The brushwork is delicate yet strong and the coloring pure and elegant, making this a masterpiece in the tradition of sketching from life.
According to the artist’s inscription at the end of the scroll, he began the painting during a convivial gathering with scholar-friends and completed it within a month, hoping to exchange it for the poetry of a friend.
