He studied with both Chu Yun-ming and Wen Cheng-ming. As a person he was noted for his filial and upright character; as an artist, for his talents not only as a painter but as a poet, essayist, and calligrapher. His landscapes and paintings of flowers and birds are singularly elegant and graceful. Long attributed to Lu Chih, this painting holds within it the divers flowers of the four seasons: irises, orchids, buttercups, camillas, hibiscus, narcissus, and several varieties of peonies and roses. Included also are the blossoms of the magnolia, pomegranate, cherry apple, plum, and peach trees.
