One person is shown in repose and the other moving, whereas the individual horses are shown in a variety of poses and actions. The entire scroll has been rendered with fine brushwork. The artist first outlined most of the forms in light ink and then filled them with dark ink. Although this work has an inscription in Chao Yung's name, it lacks the archaic tendency found in his other works. Chao Yung (style name Chung-mu), to whom this work is traditionally attributed, was the son of Chao Meng-fu (1254-1322) and followed in the family painting tradition. Chao Yung excelled at landscapes and was gifted at rendering horses, figures, and bamboo and rocks.
