In landscapes, he followed with some adaptation the style of Shen Chou. He also excelled at painting water scenes. He could execute screens and scrolls in a large format with an ample feeling and without excessive detail. Although associated with the literary Wu School, Hsieh’s style also resembles that of such Che School painters as Tai Chin and Wu Wei. Two hoary pines on a slope with spirit fungi writhe upward into the air to meet the mists and clouds. The brushwork possesses an antique and powerful strength, in which a sense of force and solidity dominates.
