He is recognized as the most skilled painter of the Qing, being known with Wang Shimin, Wang Jian, and Wang Yuanqi as one of the “Four Wangs.” This album of 12 leaves imitates styles of various ancient masters. Three have been selected here: “‘Shady Trees in a Summer Landscape’ by Dong Beiyuan (Yuan),” “‘Snowy Landscape’ by Li Yingqiu (Cheng),” and “‘Tall Trees in Evening Mist’ by Xu Daoning.” The painting methods all differ, indicating that he followed the stylistic features of these three artists.
