Wen Chia (1501-1583)
Ming Dynasty
Wen Chia, a native of Soochow, was the second son of the famous scholar-artist Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559). Wen Chia was skilled at poetry and calligraphy, and his painting followed that of his father. His brushwork was elegant and angular, and his use of ink was especially rich and unique.
The 13 leaves of this album, except for the last two depicting flowers, are of landscapes in either ink or ink and colors. A poetic quality pervades the paintings in perfect harmony. The brushwork is clear and energetic, and the colors are refined, contributing to the clarity and elegance of these works. Thus, this album carries on in the family style of Wen Cheng-ming
