He spent his entire life devoted to poetry and painting, never sitting for the civil service examinations. He was known as one of the Four Masters of the Ming. This album describes scenic areas in and around the Soochow area, Shen’s hometown. The work reveals the joy of leisure and solitude in the landscape that scholars enjoyed at the time. The poetry and prose that was inscribed on this album was done in 1814 by the Chia-ch’ing Emperor (r. 1796-1820).
