As an official, his highest rank was the governor of Kansu province. His landscapes are composed of broad, moist and free brushstrokes, which resembles Lan-yin’s works. His late works are, however, noted for the quality of dry and sparse brushstrokes. He died at the age of 80. In spring, the mountains are freshly verdant and the willows gently sway along the river. Two herdboys are merrily strolling in this pastoral scenery. The brushstrokes in this painting, though executed sparsely, are forceful and spontaneous, which was the characteristics of the contemporary literati painting.
