@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@ Wang Shih-min was a native of T’ai-ts’ang, Kiangsu province. His style name was Sun-chih, and his sobriquets were Hsi-lu lau-jen, Hsi-tien chu-jen, Ou-hsieh tso-jen and K’uei-ts’un lau-nung. He obtained the chih-shih degree during the Wan-li reign (1573-1620) of the Ming dynasty, but terminated his position as a scholar and became a recluse as China entered rule under the Man-chus. Wang excelled at poetry, writing, painting and calligraphy, and possessed a particularly keen understanding of landscapes. In his youth, he studied principles of painting with Tung Ch’i-ch’ang and Ch’en Chi-ju, and his family were also collectors. Thus he was exposed to great ancient works. Eventually, he became the first of the six masters of the early Ch’ing dynasty.
Amidst the trees along the riverbank, an old man sits in solitude within a thatched hut. Behind him is a stolid mountain under which rests a simple pavilion on a flat bank. The rugged hillside in the distance is light in tone. The central mountains and rocks have been executed layer upon layer with hemp-fiber brushstrokes and wash, and are imbued with a refined and grandiose manner. This painting is from the album Five Landscape Painters of the Ch’ing Dynasty.
