One end of a covered walkway, hidden by the greenery, connects to two large halls on the other side. The architectural motifs, meticulously arranged in the lower half of the painting, leave the upper part gradually blank, forming a space both penetrating and spacious. The sky, illuminated in bright moonlight, creates a lyrical realm that appears remote and distant.
This is a typical rendering of space in Southern Song intimate landscape painting. The ruled-line depiction of architectural elements is refined, revealing a style pursuing realism and close to nature. The figures here also all have the characteristically pure and delicate features of those in Song painting, while the evidence of offerings and towers indicate that this work might portray an activity at an official’s residence on the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival.(20101015)
