On the ground lies a length of bamboo into which the cricket had been put after capture. When Chinese children caught crickets, they would put two into a length of bamboo and let them fight. The weaker would be set free and the stronger put into a cricket cage. When the opportunity arose, two children would pit their prize crickets against each other. The combination of tending water-buffalo and hunting for crickets was one aspect of the life of young cowherds in rural China. This painting bears several collectors' seals, including those of An Ch'i of the 18th century.
