Two of them on the ground are looking down. Another is looking up at the one descending as if to greet it. The layers of ink washes in this work are exceptionally refined, revealing that the artist had a firm grasp of the details of forms as well as the atmosphere of a misty autumn day. This work in terms of subject matter, composition, and coloring preserves the essence of so-called "intimate scenery" painting of shoals and waterfowl from the Southern Sung period (1127-1279). Overall, however, the brushwork appears slightly weak. This is the 11th leaf from "Album of Collected Paintings Through the Ages".
