From the upper right hangs an ear of grain. Two sparrows perch on the stalks-one just above the ear ready to pick at it and the other looking up. They are realistically rendered with minute brushwork. Each grain was first outlined, filled with varying shades of yellow to show volume, and then dotted with white powder. Beads of grain were drawn with a very fine brush. The long blades seem to be delineated with slow brushwork. Two shades of green are used and the dried tips are done in yellowish brown. Although the coloring and brushwork are simple, they amply express the form. This is the 7th leaf from Collected Paintings by Sung Artists.
