Vapor permeates the gloomy sky like a layer of gauze. A covered skiff transports an approaching scholar with heavy clothes. This is the story of the famed Eastern Chin scholar Wang Hui-chih. One night, he got drunk and saw a clear moon rise after snow. Its pure color reminded him of his friend Tai K'uei at Yen-hsi (modern Sheng-hsien, Chekiang). He then took a boat all night from Shan-ying (modern Shao-hsing, Chekiang) to see him, but just as he got there, he changed his mind and returned, saying, “The joy in coming should be used in returning.” In the opposing leaf, the Ch'ien-lung Emperor brings up the question, “Is he is going or returning?”
