The male with its colorful plumage stands as the female looks down as if searching for food. The artist rendered the appearance of the birds quite faithfully. The reeds on the shore and the scattered clumps of pink knotweed make this scene even more rustic. This work is quite similar to Pair of Ducks, an anonymous Sung painting in the Shanghai Museum-except that the composition is reversed. Both belong to the waterfowl-and-shoals theme popular in the late Northern and early Southern Sung. The original title gives the artist as Mao I, a Painter-in-Attendance under the Southern Sung emperor Hsiao-tsung. This is the 11th leaf from the album "Collected Sung and Yuan Paintings".
