Legend has it to be the place where Jiang Taigong fished. The foreground of this work features a bank with scattered trees. Separated by a river, a few peaks appear in the background, the water’s surface suggested by the two skiffs. The composition is similar to Shen Zhou’s “Landscape,” also on display here, only more simplified in places and with Mi dots added to the mountain forms. Furthermore, the brushwork is weaker and the dots arranged in a patterned manner. Thus, even though it has the simple lightness of Shen Zhou’s original, the brushwork unfortunately lacks Shen’s straightforward spirit. The inscription and seal on this work are spurious, making it likely a Huang Gongwang fabrication based on the painting of Shen Zhou.(20110609)
