Although very few mentions of him appear in the Sung and the Yuan writings, references to his works occasionally came to be noted during the Ming. Most of those record his forte as a painter of normadic tribesmen on horses. The Yuan painter K'o Chiu-ssu praised Ch'en's work as being as fine as that of Huang Ch'ung-tao, a well-known horse painter of the Hsuan-ho period of the Sung Dynasty. A man riding a horse and leading another fine steed gallops across the flatlands. The white-whiskered rider is most likely of noble rank; his apparel, consisting in part of a vermilion-colored shirt, is of the T'ang Dynasty style. The horses are large and strong, their strides steady, as if the training is moving in a desirable direction toward completion. The entire work exhibits an atmosphere and characteristics of the T'ang period.
