Ch’en Shu (1660-1736)
Ch’ing dynasty
Ch’en Shu’s style name was Nan-lou; her sobriquets were Shang-yuan ti-tzu and later Nan-lou lao-jen. She was a native of Chia-hsing, Chekiang. She married Ch’ien Lun-kuang of Chia-hsing, and her elder son Ch’ien Ch’en-Ch’un served as a high official. Because of his high position, she was given the title t’ai shu-jen. She was good at painting birds and flowers, insects and grasses, as well as landscapes and figures. She is a well-known early Ch’ing woman artist.
This album contains ten leaves. Among them are depictions of subjects such as bamboo, mynah, grapes, kite, sparrow, winter prunus, dahlia, eggplant, persimmon, and so forth. In each leaf, the use of monochrome is predominant and color is slightly applied, so that they set off each against the other to advantage. The brushwork is relaxed; the dots and washes are unrestrained. The forms and attitudes of the flora and fauna are true to life. The poise and bearing of every creature are lofty and antique.
