He was the grandson of the reknowned painter Wang Shih-min. After passing the chin-shih examination during the reign of the K’ang-hsi Emperor, he served as a vice-minister of revenue and became known as Wang Ssu-nung. After reaching a certain level in the bureaucracy, he devoted himself to painting. He closely followed the style of his forebears, and employed the light coloring techniques of the Yűan Dynasty master, Huang Kung-wang. Wang was the originator of the Lou-tung School, and Wang Yűan-ch’i, Wang Shih-min, Wang Chien and Wang Hui are collectively known as the “Four Wangs” This landscape was painted when Wang Yűan-ch’i was fifty-eight years old. Painted in the “one river, two banks” format, this melancholy and barren scene is reminiscent of the works of Ni Tsan. However, the brushwork is in Wang’s personal style. This is truly a carefully executed painting.
