He initially excelled at painting landscapes but could not surpass the famous landscapist of his day, Wang Hui, so he turned to flower painting instead. Abandoning contemporary fashion, he formed an original style and became universally admired for founding the Changzhou School. This album of 12 leaves depicts scenes of peony, reeds and a crab, sparse trees and waterside pavilion, withered trees with bamboo and rocks, pond lotus and fish, and an ink landscape. Flowers appear with fine variations of light and dark colors, the landscapes desolate and elegant. The brush and ink are plain and reserved for a pure and lofty elegance.(20120103)
