His tzu (style name) was Yuan-chao and his hao (sobriquets) Hsiang-pi and Jan-hsiang an-chu. He was a grandson of the scholar-artist Wang Shih-chen, and held office as Prefect of Canton. He was a most expert painter, being considered one of the Four Wangs of the Ch’ing dynasty for his landscapes.
This album was painted in 1660 when the artist was sixty-two years of age. This was the period of his greatest achievement in the imitation of the ancient masters. The brushwork throughout the album is highly refined. The artist has sought no surface similarity with his ancient models, but an inner consonance.
