He later catered to the popular style of Sungkiang literati painting. Lan did this album, consisting of 12 leaves, in 1651 at the age of 66 while living in Chia-hsing. On display here are the first 2 leaves, which are “Spring Oriole Among Willow and Apricot” and “Snowy Bird Among Pear Blossoms”. Inscribed on one are lines of poetry and on the other is a reference to the style of a Sung dynasty (960-1279) artist, both traditional elements in painting. Poetic expression rather than the actual appearance of a “snowy bird” and “spring oriole” is thus emphasized here, serving in contrast to “Manual of Birds” on display here.@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@Lan Ying was a native of Ch’ien-t’ang, Chekiang. His style name was T’ien-shu, his sobriquets Tieh-sou and Shih-t’ou-t’o. He excelled at landscapes, figures, birds, flowers, and especially orchids. This album of twelve leaves was painted in 1651 when Lan Ying, in his sixty-seventh year, was visiting Chia-hsing. The inscriptions, written between the ninth lunar month ninth day, and the tenth lunar month, indicate it was completed in about one month. The entire album is painted in gold-sprinkled paper. The brushwork has depth and firmness, the colouring has an antique beauty. It is an expression of the artist’s most characteristic qualities.
