He learned painting from Shen Chou and was one of the Four Masters of the Ming.
These two blossoms of autumn have an alluring fragrance. Here, they were done in the “ink outline (pai-miao)” method, in which the jasmine leaves are in ink and the osmanthus leaves in green to which lines were added for the veins. These fluid lines suggest an endless sense of life. This is the 6th leaf from We's “Album of Flowers”, which was done in 1533 when he accepted an invitation to Hsu Chin's home on West Mountain at Tung-t'ing. In a moment of high spirits while there, he completed this album based on the flowers that he saw before his window.
