Accomplished as a poet, essayist, calligrapher, and painter, he earned particular fame in the latter two disciplines and is the foremost of the “Four Masters of the Ming” (the others are Shen Chou, T’ang Yin, and Ch’iu Ying). He was the pupil of Shen Chou, but there is a clear distinction between their styles, as most of Wen Cheng-ming’s paintings are executed in colors, using a fine, delicate manner. Wen also occasionally did a type of rough monochrome ink sketch in which the blunt strength more clearly shows the influence of Shen Chou. This scroll is an example of the latter type.
