Tall Peak and Distant Lake
Ch'iu Ying (ca. 1494-1552)
Ming Dynasty
Ch'iu Ying was a native of Kiangsu and once worked as a lacquer artisan as a youth. He later met and learned from the painter Chou Ch'en, achieving fame in the world of art.
This is the 1st leaf from the album Six Scenes in Sung and Yuan Styles. Shown is a high peak and broad lake with skiffs floating for a sense of wide space. Since the great art collector Hsiang Yuan-pien was once the patron of Ch'iu Ying, Ch'iu had the opportunity to view and copy many ancient works. A crisp, clean sense of beauty marks many of his works. This painting bears the collection seal of Hsiang Yuan-pien, indicating that it may have been done by Ch'iu for Hsiang.
