He was especially skilled at painting flowers, achieving the spirit and likeness of his subject. This handscroll was painted in monochrome ink in the “sketching ideas” manner. Depicted are flowers and fruits of autumn and winter, including hollyhocks, begonias, chrysanthemums, cassia, plum blossoms, citrus, and geraniums. The flowers and leaves twist and turn in a variety of poses and angles that give a lively sense to the work. Though the brushwork is sketchy, none of the details have been lost as the artist has revealed the elegant and refined side to the subject matter.
